Tiverton Town 8 - 1 Dawlish

Saturday 11/08/2001   Devon St Luke's Cup
John Reidy

Tivvy began the season with a good win against a very hard working Dawlish side who‚ to their credit‚ never gave up and played well right to the final whistle. Tivvy‚ although at a canter‚ were too strong for Dawlish and dominated from start to finish Goals rained in from everywhere. David Steele‚ Steve Daly‚ Phil Everett‚ Kevin Nancekivell‚ Dave Leonard‚ Paul Chenoweth‚ Antony Lynch and Dave Toomey all getting on the scoresheet.
Tivvy took the lead in the 14th minute when David Steele finished superbly from a Dave Leonard cross‚ and just two minutes later‚ David Steele is again involved‚ this time being brought down in the box by Steve Bowker. The resultant penalty was cooly dispatched by Steve Daly.
Phil Everett headed home a terrific cross from Dave Leonard to make it 3 - 0 before Dawlish got themselves back in the game. A Luke Vinnicombe error giving the impressive Steve Blurton plenty of time to shoot past Eddie. Tivvy turned things up slightly‚ and it was no surprise when when Tivvy got their fourth goal. Kevin Nancekivell cleverly picked up Scott Rogers´ througth ball and beat the keeper with ease. Dave Leonard opened the scoring in the second half when on 51 minutes he scored a fantastic goal; a long range looping header across the face of goal. The goal of the game however‚ came just 2 minutes later when Paul Chenoweth sublimely chipped the keeper from 25 yards.
Surely Lynchy was going to get his first goal at Ladysmead against lower opposition and surely he did. The look of pleasure and relief was a sight to behold and so was what was about to follow. The manor in which the Tivvy players celebrated his goal with him was for me a defining moment as the depth of team spirit was there for all to see. Dave Toomey then scored what must be his softest goal of the season to bring this entertaining game to an end.

Line up: 1 Paul Edwards‚ 2 David Steele‚ 3 Neil Saunders‚ 4 Luke Vinicombe‚ 5 Stuart Smith‚ 6 Scott Rogers‚ 7 Kevin Nancekivel‚ 8 Dave Leonard‚ 9 Phil Everett‚ 10 Steve Daly‚ 11 Antony Lynch .
Subs: Steve Ovens (Antony Lynch 69)‚ Pete Conning‚ Richard Pears.

(Dave Toomey and Paul Chenoweth were used subs; full information is not available)
