Chippenham Town won this pre-season encounter as they struck twice in quick succession early in the game and then comfortably held on to their advantage. Strikes from James Guthrie and Dean Griffiths proved to be the difference, and although Tiverton forged a few good opportunities the Yellows were hindered by the dismissal of Adam Faux just before the half-hour mark, and from that stage their task was always a thankless one.

Griffiths fired wide inside the first twenty seconds as the visitors started brightly, but Chippenham weren’t able to dominate despite their positive opening, and Kevin Sawyer needed to be on his guard to divert Lewis Tasker’s fizzing shot over the crossbar. But the Bluebirds finally found an opening when Dave Gilroy was allowed space to run through the middle before picking out Guthrie to fire past Chris Wright.

And no sooner had Tivvy restarted that Chippenham doubled their advantage. Guthrie crossed from the left and when Wright failed to claim Griffiths was on hand to tap the ball into the net from close range.

Tivvy were further hindered when Adam Faux was sent off for lashing out at former teammate Griffiths, the culmination of a fued that had been bubbling away throughout the early stages of the game.

David Steele might have pulled a goal back for Tivvy on the stroke of half time but volleyed wide after Andy Taylor’s free kick hadn’t been full cleared, and early in the second half Kevin Hill nodded straight at Sawyer from another Taylor set piece.

Ahead of a host of substitutions Luke Ballinger was twice denied, first by Wright and then immediately by Michael Nardiello on the goal-line. And as time wore on Jules Emati-Emati blazed over when well placed, while substitute goalkeeper Connor Thompson did well to turn Harry Nodwell’s snapshot around the post.

All the while Wright was the busier of the ’keepers, saving without being exerted fully from Alan Griffin twice, Ballinger and Brandon Barnes. Chippenham more than deserved the victory and curiously Tivvy looked better when they were a man short.
