Tivvy were absolutely magnificent tonight against a very useful Newport side‚ who are currently lying in sixth place in the Premier Division. Tivvy were superior in all positions and could have won by a bigger margin had it not been for some good goal keeping and some indecisive finishing. Newport played some good open football which‚ being Tivvy´s hallmark‚ suited us very nicely. Newport to their credit were not prepared to play deep‚ unlike most of the clubs that have visited Ladysmead recently‚ and the Tivvy midfield led by the superb Steve Daly and the two forwards; Dominic Richardson and Pete Varley revelled in the space‚ playing some lovely football.
Tivvy had the best of the early exchanges with Pete Varley‚ on 4 minutes putting through a beautiful ball to Dominic Richardson who´s shot went straight at the keeper. Two minutes later Pete Varley had an attempt go just slightly over with the keeper well beaten. On 12 minutes a cross from Dominic Richardson was met by Pete Varley who´s resultent shot was cleared off the line. On 34 minutes Kevin Nancekivell‚ for the second consecutive game‚ was brought down in the area and again was denied a penalty. And just to rub some salt in the wound‚ the ref decided‚ to everyones amazement‚ to book him for diving. We all know that acting is not one of Nance´s stronger points.
Newport took the lead on 41 minutes when a seemingly inocuous cross was headed in unchallenged. It was a very disapointing goal to concede at a bad time but Tivvy showed once more‚ as they have on several occasions this season‚ that they can fight back straight away. And so it was tonight‚ as it took just 2 minutes for them to equalise. Pete Varley´s shot took a deflection and the lose ball was headed goalward by Kevin Nancekivell. The ball was parried by the ´keeper but it fell kindly for Steve Daly who fired home.
The second half was only 3 minutes old when Phil Everett headed home superbly from a Steve Daly Cross. Kevin Nancekivell had a glorious opportunity to seal the game with only the ´keeper to beat‚ but as he tried to round him he made a good save to take the ball off Nance´s feet.
Although Newport applied more pressure in the second half‚ they never really troubled the Tivvy defence and so it was that Tivvy recorded a memorable victory. Oh‚ did I say that Tivvy were magnificent?
Line up: Edwards‚ Vinnicombe‚ Saunders‚ Tatterton‚ Smith‚ Conning‚ Nancekivell‚ Varley‚ Richardson‚ Daly‚ Everett.
