Tiverton Town 4 - 3 Evesham United

Saturday 04/09/1999   FA Cup

Tivvy continued their unbeaten run with a hard fought victory over a well organised Evesham side in this F.A.Cup 1st qualifying round. Tivvy deserved their win but were‚ on occasion‚ their own worst enemy‚ being caught in possession‚ lacking inventiveness in attack and guilty of some questionable defending. Micky Fallon was excellent in defence and gave the team a more balanced look with extra width and attacking options. Lee Harvey in his first game for the club did well and scored an important goal at the start of the second half‚ and the irrepressible Steve Ovens´ hard work was rewarded with a well deserved goal.

Tivvy took the lead in the 36th minute when a long throw from Lee Harvey was flicked on at the near post by Kevin Nancekivell. Steve Ovens‚ unmarked‚ headed towards goal from seven yards only for Melvin Watson‚ the Evesham ´keeper‚ to pull off a great save‚ but the ball fell to Steve Daly who ´powerfully sliced´ the ball into the ground and the resultant bounce deceived everyone to fly into the top left corner.

Three minutes later‚ it was Steve Daly again involved in the next goal‚ but unfortunately this time it was Evesham´s equaliser. Steve Daly was caught in possession deep insight the Tivvy half and the resultant cross was placed beautifully into his own net by Darren Tallon.

The second half was just three minutes old when Steve Ovens got wide near the byline‚ passed inside to Lee Harvey who controlled the ball‚ turned and shot through the keepers legs to open his account for the club. Tivvy were now flying and just one minute later a free kick taken by Neil Saunders into the box could only be tipped on by the Evesham ´keeper when he rose with Darren Tallon´s challenge. The ball fell to Steve Ovens who headed into an empty net.

Evesham got back into the game‚ scoring their second goal on 57 minutes. A low cross/shot could only be parried‚ by the otherwise faultless Paul Edwards‚ straight into the path of Steve Yates who had a simple tap in.

Steve Daly received a long pass on 70 minutes. He controlled the ball‚ turned and passed perfectly into the path of Scott Rogers who from 20 yards hit the ball first time and bent the ball around the outstretched ´keeper. On 79 minutes Tivvy nearly got their fifth goal when Pete Conning‚ on the for Kevin Nancekivell‚ saw his amazing 30 yard shot just clip the crossbar.

The impressive Micky Fallon was sent off in the 90th minute when he handled the ball on the line and Evesham´s Joe Licata scored from the resultant penalty.
